About
Julie M. Philips
I am a New York native with a loyal roster of clients for whom I provide business affairs and legal services in all aspects of production. I began my career at one of the major boutique talent firms, working with A-list clients including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Hughes, Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger. I followed that with more than twenty years in my own practice focused on production legal work, and today provide full-service representation across all stages of the entertainment lifecycle.
My experience as an advocate for both artists and production companies gives me a unique understanding of the objectives of all parties to any negotiation. My work includes negotiating and documenting financing and distribution agreements, above- and below-the-line employment agreements, rights acquisitions, location and facilities agreements, and clearances and releases, including complex arrangements for the acquisition of adaptation and remake rights in the works of world-renowned playwrights (such as Tom Stoppard) and international filmmakers (such as Akira Kurosawa).
Representative projects for which I have negotiated the major production-related agreements include Macbeth, Val, Uncut Gems, Lady Bird, The Kissing Booth 2 and 3, Triple Frontier, Eighth Grade and The Meyerowitz Stories. More recent projects include Past Lives, Materialists, Ferrari, Ezra, Marty Supreme, Margo’s Got Money Troubles and Misty Green.
I earned my undergraduate degree with honors in political science and economics from Skidmore College in New York, and my J.D. from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. I am based in Los Angeles, where I raised my twins.
